Key Stage 2 SATs – Important information for parents

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our recent KS2 SATs meeting. If you were unable to join us, we want to ensure you have access to the important information shared during the session.

SATs are a very significant milestone in your child’s education, assessing their progress and helping to ensure they are ready for secondary school. SATs take place in May.

What are SATs?

Year 6 students will sit tests in Reading, Maths, and Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPAG). Writing is teacher-assessed.

Why do SATs matter?

Results help secondary schools with setting and transition.

What is the testing format?

  • Reading – 1-hour paper with three texts.
  • SPAG – Two papers: one on grammar & punctuation (45 mins) and one on spelling (20 words).
  • Maths – Three papers: arithmetic (30 mins) and two reasoning papers (40 mins each).

You can find a more detailed Key Questions and Answers About SATS in a fact sheet here.

Supporting your child at home

This is so important. Encourage reading, ensure regular practice, and provide a quiet space for learning. Rest, nutrition, and a positive mindset are key!
