Enfield Heights teachers and pupils attempt science challenge - Will they make it?

Last week, our year 2 teacher Miss Cetin set the children of Enfield Heights a science challenge to compete, called the “Egg challenge”.

The objective is to get the egg to fall into the cup of water directly below it by hitting the cardboard at the exact speed for it to fall in the water.

This challenge was set because pupils have been learning about “inertia”. Inertia describes an object in terms of how much energy is needed to move it or stop it from moving.

Since the tray and tube are lightweight they have little inertia, and will easily move out of the way.

The egg, however, is heavier and has more inertia so it is not easily moved, leaving it in place for gravity to bring it down into the cup.
